Most word problems or graphs impose a context upon students that may be unfamiliar or unimaginative. However, when given a graph with no labels, we become empowered to make it mean whatever we wish. This session guides participants through the Mathematical Language Routine known as “co-crafting.” Co-crafting's many forms (giving meaning to mysterious charts, telling math stories from simple sentences, or recontextualizing problems) invite students to bridge what they understand with what they will soon know. Attendees will co-craft questions from given contexts, co-create problems similar to given tasks, and co-craft situations from an unlabeled graph.
