Math is not just about numbers. Math is not about memorization. Math is about connections and patterns and sequences. So how do we take the “sit and get” out of math and support our students with engaging in productive struggle? By creating a culture of exploration and wonderment through the math practices, students will “lean into the math” and take ownership, whether it’s right or wrong. Students need to trust and persevere through the mathematics by being part of a positive classroom community. From establishing a collaborative culture, to students taking ownership of the learning, we will look at practical strategies to support students with embracing the struggle and looking at math in a new light!
I taught secondary math for 9 years and this is my 10th year as an instructional math coach for Ceres Unified. My passion is for students to have a positive math identity and to have confidence in math!
